HomeMy WebLinkAbout20210120 - Meeting MinutesRed Wing Youth Commission Regular Meeting via Video Conference January 20, 2021 Commissioners Present: Chairperson Alainn Hanson (joined at 6:19 p.m.); Commissioners Molly Bradley, Deyahni Cooper, Devon Copley, Rachel Hauschildt, Gavin Magill, Allie Meyer, Nora Meyer, and Kaylee Snider Commissioners Absent: Commissioners Matthew Lu and Kayleigh Hoppman Others Present: Michael Wilson, Mayor; Helen Korbel, Staff Liaison; Laurel Stinson, Council Liaison 1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 6:06 p.m. by Staff Liaison Korbel. 2. Pledge of Allegiance Meeting attendees recited the Pledge of Allegiance. 3. Statement of Intent Staff Liaison Korbel read the Statement of Intent 4. Youth Commission Purpose Statement Commissioner Snider read the Youth Commission Purpose Statement. 5. Roll Call Roll call was conducted. Commissioners Hauschildt, Magill, A. Meyer, N. Meyer, Snider, Bradley, Copley, and Cooper were in attendance at this point in the meeting. Chairperson Hanson joined the meeting late due to technical issues. 6. Approval of Agenda A motion was made by Commissioner A. Meyer, seconded by Commissioner Magill, to approve the agenda as presented. A roll call vote was conducted, and the motion carried unanimously. 7. Greeting from Mayor Michael Wilson Mayor Wilson expressed appreciation to Youth Commission members for their service and stated that he looks forward to working with the Youth Commission to accomplish the goals listed on the 2021 Work Plan. He invited Youth Commission members to visit him at City Hall or his Third Street office. He discussed the various positions he has held within local government and some of the reasons for his involvement. 8. Approval of Minutes A. December 16, 2020, Meeting Minutes. Red Wing Youth Commission Meeting Minutes Page 1 of 3 January 20, 2021 Staff Liaison Korbel referenced the draft meeting minutes and described the process to approve the minutes. A motion was made by Commissioner Snider to approve the meeting minutes. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Cooper. A roll call vote was conducted, and the motion carried unanimously. 9. Discussion of 2021 Work Plan Draft Staff Liaison Korbel referenced discussion of the draft 2021 Work Plan during the recent workshop. Commissioner Snider suggested adding a goal to aid Red Wing families. Commissioner Hauschildt referenced discussion of focusing initially on Red Wing youth outreach, prior to reaching out to young families. Staff Liaison Korbel referenced the Youth Commission Purpose Statement in terms of working together with City government to make change and provided examples. Commissioner Bradley suggested keeping the 2021 Work Plan more centered, rather than trying to tackle too much at once. Chairperson Hanson asked Commissioner Snider to expand on her suggestion. Commissioner Snider provided rationale for her suggestion to try to do something for Red Wing families, as this has been a challenging year. Chairperson Hanson referenced the workshop discussion and expressed agreement with Commissioner Bradley's suggestion to keep the 2021 Work Plan more centered. 10. Approval of 2021 Work Plan A. Work Plan Draft. A motion was made by Commissioner Magill, seconded by Commissioner N. Meyer, to adopt the 2021 Red Wing Youth Commission Work Plan as drafted. A roll call vote was conducted, and the motion carried unanimously. 11. Public Comment Chairperson Hanson reviewed the public comment procedure. There was no public comment. 12. Commissioner Comments and Questions Chairperson Hanson introduced herself to Mayor Wilson. Staff Liaison Korbel suggested discussion of committee assignments. Chairperson Hanson referenced the workshop discussion, reviewed the Youth Commission committees for 2021, and described the work of these groups. Chairperson Hanson and Commissioners Lu and Bradley volunteered to serve on this committee. 2) Youth Opportunities. Chairperson Hanson and Commissioners Copley, Hauschildt, and Cooper volunteered to serve on this committee. 3) Youth Opportunities in the Arts. Commissioners Snider, Lu, and N. Meyer volunteered to serve on this committee. 4) Researching Other Youth Commissions. Commissioners Lu, Magill, A. Meyer, and Bradley volunteered to serve on this committee. Staff Liaison Korbel reviewed the Red Wing Youth Commission budget and described how these funds can be used. Staff Liaison Korbel suggested that Youth Commission members attend other Red Wing Board and Commission meetings, to get an idea of what other groups are working on and provide input from a youth perspective. Commissioner A. Meyer suggested that the Youth Commission set up a booth at the schools, in order to raise awareness about the Red Wing Youth Commission and encourage other students to become involved. Chairperson Hanson discussed other outreach activities during community events. Chairperson Hanson suggested that Staff Liaison Korbel forward information about other Red Wing Boards and Commissions to Youth Commission members. Staff Liaison Korbel suggested inviting students to provide public comments during Red Wing Youth Commission meetings, in order to make their voices heard. Staff Liaison Korbel reminded Commission members to provide their contact information to her. Chairperson Hanson discussed the committee work and reporting process. 13.Adiournment Chairperson Hanson adjourned the meeting at 6:40 p.m. Red Wing Youth Commission Meeting Minutes Page 3 of 3 January 20, 2021
