Workshop via Video Conference
January 13, 2021
Commissioners Present: Chairperson Alainn Hanson; Commissioners Matthew Lu,
Devon Copley, Rachel Hauschildt, Gavin Magill, Allie Meyer, Nora Meyer, and Kaylee
Snider
Commissioners Absent: Commissioners Molly Bradley, Deyahni Cooper, and
Kayleigh Hoppman
Others Present: Helen Korbel, Staff Liaison; Laurel Stinson, Council Liaison
1. Call to Order
The workshop was called to order at 6:05 p.m. by Chairperson Hanson.
2. Pledge of Allegiance
Workshop attendees recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
3. Youth Commission Purpose Statement
Commissioner Snider read the Youth Commission Purpose Statement.
4. Roll Call
Roll call was conducted. Chairperson Hanson and Commissioners Hauschildt, Lu,
Magill, A. Meyer, N. Meyer, Snider, and Copley were in attendance. Staff Liaison
Korbel noted that some Youth Commission members experienced technical
difficulties during the workshop.
5. Work Plan Planning
Chairperson Hanson referenced suggestions that were submitted by Commission
members. She asked Commission members to discuss their ideas and suggested
organizing these ideas into a few general categories for the 2021 Work Plan.
Commissioner Snider reviewed her ideas:
• Develop collaborations between residents in assisted living facilities and Red
Wing youth through written communication, art projects, and classic car
cruises.
• Provide donations for local businesses and artists via a raffle.
• Participate in environmental projects.
• Facilitate youth art showings at Central Park or Bay Point Park.
Commissioner Magill presented his ideas:
• Organize ride-alongs and other youth activities with the Red Wing Police to
help promote understanding.
• Establish a public space for youth to meet and socialize.

• Help organize social youth activities.
Commissioner Copley discussed his idea:
• Reach out to Red Wing youth during this challenging time — because of the
pandemic and the current political climate — to offer resources and provide
ways for youth to make their voices heard.
Commissioner Hauschildt shared her idea:
• Encourage more involvement in local government and youth programs.
Commissioner Lu reviewed his ideas:
• Research what other communities with youth commissions are doing.
• Promote city-wide sustainability and methods for going green.
• Stimulate interest and encourage student participation in the Red Wing Youth
Commission.
• Use the Red Wing Youth Commission as an outlet to reach out to citizens,
young adults, and young families to assess their needs.
• Communicate with Red Wing youth and solicit their input.
Chairperson Hanson discussed her ideas:
• Create opportunities for youth.
• Develop sustainability initiatives.
• Show support for the LGBT+ community in Red Wing, and specifically the
youth.
Chairperson Hanson summarized ideas submitted by Commissioner Bradley, who
was unable to attend the workshop.
• Start a local food initiative.
• Create sustainability projects and energy-saving initiatives.
• Start a dog -walking service for charity.
Chairperson Hanson commented that the broad categories could include the
following:
1) Environmental issues.
2) Youth opportunities.
3) Research other youth commissions.
Each category was further discussed. It was suggested that the Red Wing Youth
Commission work with the Red Wing Sustainability Commission to help support the
efforts of this group. It was suggested to promote shopping local.
It was suggested to ask Commissioner Bradley if she wanted to serve on the
Environmental Committee. Staff Liaison Korbel indicated that she would do so.
Commissioner Lu also volunteered to serve on this committee.

Chairperson Hanson suggested creating a youth support network. Council Liaison
Stinson suggested working with the Library staff and the Library Board on this
initiative. Commissioner Lu commented with regard to existing programs.
Commissioner Copley provided additional suggestions in this regard.
Commissioner Snider commented that the YMCA has offered a mentoring program
in the past. She also suggested broadening the scope to include Red Wing families.
It was suggested to set up a "judgment free zone" via online meetings or web chats,
along with providing resources, including mental health resources. Potential options
in this regard were discussed.
Chairperson Hanson and Commissioners Copley and Hauschildt volunteered to
serve on the Youth Opportunities Committee.
Promotion of the Red Wing Youth Commission and research in terms of what other
youth commissions are doing were discussed. Chairperson Hanson provided
additional background information. Commissioners Lu, Magill, and A. Meyer
volunteered to serve on this committee. Chairperson Hanson indicated that she
would forward some resources in this regard.
Potential youth opportunities were further discussed.
Youth opportunities relating to the arts were discussed. It was suggested to create a
separate committee to work on these initiatives. It was suggested to reach out to the
Red Wing Arts & Culture Commission to provide input from a youth perspective, as
this group will be working on a community arts and culture plan.
Commissioners Snider, Lu, and N. Meyer volunteered to serve on this committee. A
potential youth art show was further discussed, along with ways to connect youth
artists with each other and with the community. A potential philanthropy project was
discussed. Council Liaison Stinson clarified the scope of the Youth Commission in
terms of fundraising. A potential mural project was discussed. Potential partnership
opportunities were discussed.
Social media networking was discussed.
Staff Liaison Korbel commented that the City Council may also assign projects to the
Youth Commission.
Next steps were discussed. It was suggested to encourage absent Commissioners
to view the workshop video prior to the next regular meeting on January 20. It was
suggested to further discuss and vote on the 2021 Work Plan during the next
meeting.

It was suggested to continue reading the Red Wing Youth Commission Purpose
Statement at the beginning of every meeting.
Staff Liaison Korbel commented that Mayor Wilson has asked to join the next
meeting, share some comments, and answer any questions that Youth Commission
members may have.
Committee membership and quorum considerations were clarified.
6. Closing Comments
Chairperson Hanson summarized the main points of discussion during the
workshop.
It was suggested that Commission members submit their preferred contact
information to Staff Liaison Korbel.
7. Adjournment
The workshop adjourned at 7:03 p.m.
