COMMENT: It is recognized that employees require nourishment during the work shift
and an opportunity to occasionally relax from their duties.
PURPOSE: To establish procedures to control breaks for the purpose of retaining
adequate manpower in service to meet continuing needs, and to advise
Supervisors, Dispatchers, and other officers of the status and location of an
officer on break.
1. DEFINITIONS
A. Coffee and lunch breaks shall be as defined in Article #3, Sections 10 and
11 of the Union Contract.
B. Provisions of this policy do not apply to administrative personnel or other
employees who are not governed by the Union Contract provisions cited
above.
2. POLICY
A. Officers shall not take lunch or coffee breaks within the first hour or the last
hour of their tour of duty.
B. Lunch breaks shall be 30 minutes in length.
1. Officers shall be allotted one (1) lunch break within a single tour of
duty.
2. Officers may take lunch breaks at the LEC lunchroom, at restaurants
or food service businesses located within the city limits of Red Wing,
or at their homes, if located within the city limits. Any other location
must be approved by on -duty supervisor.
C. Coffee breaks shall be 15 minutes in length.
1. Officers shall be allotted two (2) coffee breaks within a single eight (8)
hour or longer tour of duty.

2. Officers may take coffee breaks at the LEC lunchroom, at restaurants
or food service businesses located within the city limits of Red Wing,
or at their homes, if located within the city limits. Any other location
must be approved by on -duty supervisor.
D. Officers intending to check out for a coffee or lunch break shall first obtain
permission to do so from the Sergeant, or senior officer on duty if no
Sergeant is present.
E. Officers checking out for coffee or lunch breaks shall call out by radio at a
s ecific location and wait for acknowledgement from the Sergeant, or senior
officer if no Sergeant is present, or dispatcher. This is in accordance with
provisions in Policy #42, CALL OUT - RADIO PROCEDURES.
1. An officer checking out for coffee or lunch breaks shall ensure that at
least one unit remains clear and available for calls.
F. No more than two uniformed Red Wing Police Department officers shall be
out of service for coffee or lunch breaks at any one time.
